About Emirates
Emirates is an airline headquartered in Dubai. The airline was founded back in 1984 and was the first company to launch aircrafts with video systems in all seats – a feature that many probably appreciate when they have to fly long distances. In addition, Emirates was also the first airline to introduce telecommunications in its aircraft. Emirates is know for its quality service onboard and they always take good care of their customers on their flights.
Emirates Airlines is a world-leading airline. Emirates’ subsidiaries are a part of the UAE Government owned Emirates Group. Emirates operates two types of aircraft, Airbus and Boeing. Emirates offers international flights to 158 destinations, which are spread over 6 different continents.
The EU Regulation and air passenger’s rights
The European passenger rights in aviation (EC261/2004) ensure that airlines like Emirates take proper care of their passengers and compensate passengers if their flight has been delayed or canceled. EC 261 applies primarily to flights departing from European airports. Emirates is not a European airline, so not all of their flights may be eligible under EC 261.
Emirates flight delay compensation
If you experience a delay of more than 5 hours, you may be entitled to get a refund of your tickets or a return flight. In this situation, hotel accommodation and transport to the hotel may be necessary, then Emirates will have to pay for this.
If you arrive more than 3 hours later at your final destination, you might be able to get compensation. How much you can get in compensation will depend on how long your flight route is. The Emirates delayed flight compensation will change depending on whether the flight is:
- 1,500 km or less (250 EUR).
- Between 1,500 km – 3,500 km (400 EUR).
- Over 3,500 km and outside the (600 EUR).
The compensation must be paid out in cash by the airline or by bank transfer approved by the passenger’s signature. However, in some cases, you may find Emirates trying to avoid paying compensation by coming up with excuses. The typical excuse Emirates will try to use is that the flight delay was due to extraordinary circumstances such as bad weather, strikes, etc.
It’s not just Emirates that uses extraordinary circumstances as an excuse but most airlines in general, in order to prove that the delayed flights were not their fault. Therefore, it is a good idea to contact companies like Air Delay to have them look through these excuses when claiming compensation. However, you may lose the right to compensation if an Emirates delayed flight is actually due to extraordinary circumstances.
If an overnight delay occurs, and it means you have to book new tickets or you miss the hotel accommodation you have booked, you may have those costs reimbursed.
Overbooked flight, denied boarding
Occasionally it happens that passengers get denied boarding from a flight, and this is certainly a very frustrating situation. It may sound strange to overbook a flight and many questions may arise from this.
However, overbooking is a very common thing amongst airlines. This is because almost all flights have passengers who do not show up. This causes airlines to overbook their flights in order to make full use of their seats on the plane. If you are ever to experience something like this, you will be entitled to cancellation compensation and an alternative flight offered by the airline.
Missed connecting flight with Emirates
Missing a connecting flight can have the same issues as a flight delay or flight cancellation. Missing a flight can be due to a flight delay or flight cancellation and it is not your fault if you miss a flight because of these circumstances. Therefore, you can claim compensation for this inconvenience. The compensation will be calculated based on the distance of the first airport that you flew from, and to the final destination. However, in most of these cases, airlines such as Emirates give a replacement flight, but this will not mean that you are still not entitled to compensation. If your connecting flight is delayed by 2 hours then you will be entitled to compensation.
Emirates flight cancellation compensation and refund
An Emirates cancellation may result in many inconveniences for the passenger. If an Emirates cancellation occurs in a country where the customer did not initially start his journey then he will be forced to encounter extra expenses, which can be a very frustrating situation. If you are one of these passengers then you will not only be entitled to compensation but also have the option to choose one of the choices below:
- Full refund of the flight tickets
- Rebooking of the airline ticket to the next available departure
- Rebooking of the airline ticket at a later date
You are entitled to a paid hotel accommodation and associated transport if your flight ticket is rebooked and accommodation is required. Furthermore, Emirates has to pay for your extra expenses which include clothing, food, and beverages. However, you have to remember to keep all of your receipts and show it to the airline later when applying for a refund. But the expenses have to be considered reasonable and necessary.
There are also cases where Emirates is not entitled to give you an Emirates flight compensation. This is for example when the flight cancellation has been notified to you 2 weeks prior to the flight departing. In addition, you will not be eligible for compensation if the Emirates flight cancellations are due to extraordinary circumstances. These kind of circumstances are known as occurrences out of the airline’s control, such as bad weather, terrorist attacks, strikes, etc. If any of these factors apply to your flight, then it might be that the airline is not obliged to pay you any compensation. However, Emirates must ensure that they have done everything in their power to avoid the cancellation.
It is not possible to obtain an Emirates refund and compensation in these cases:
- If you have already been informed about cancellation 2 weeks before the scheduled departure.
- If you have already been rebooked and the booking still meets specific time limits.
- If the cancellation is due to circumstances that are extraordinary and out of the airline’s control
On the other hand, there may be a possibility that you can get compensation for a cancelled flight. How much compensation here depends on the length of your flight route:
- 1,500 km or less (250 EUR)
- Between 1,500 km – 3,500 km (400 EUR)
- Over 3,500 km and outside the European Union (600 EUR).
When an airline cancels your flight, you can also get reimbursement if you had to book new tickets or if you have lost hotel nights you had already booked.
