Refund and compensation: SAS Scandinavian Airlines

If you are in the unfortunate situation of experiencing flight delays or cancellations that affect your planned arrival time with SAS Scandinavian Airlines, then you may be entitled to flight delay compensation of up to EUR 600 per person.

The road to compensation can sometimes be long and complicated with a lot of administrative work. That is why it can be difficult and time-consuming to get the full amount of compensation that you are entitled to when your flight is delayed or canceled with SAS Scandinavian Airlines or other airlines.

Are you convinced that you are entitled to compensation if SAS cancels your flight? Then contact our experienced team of legal experts specializing in flight compensation regarding delays and cancellations.

Many passengers end up losing their compensation as they are rejected multiple times by the airline and give up. It is not easy for the common people to understand how to act when SAS-operated flights are delayed or canceled. There are several situations where you as an air passenger, can claim compensation if the flight does not proceed as scheduled. This can be either compensation for delays and cancellations or a refund for flights. Continue reading to be informed on your options and when you can get flight compensation, refund, and reimbursement.

Compensation in case of delayed flight with SAS Scandinavian Airlines

As a general rule, you can get a refund of your flight if the flight is 5 hours late or more. This means that if your flight is changed to a later flight, which is 5 hours later, then you can choose not to travel and ask the airline for a refund of the full flight ticket. If you have already flown away on your trip, you are also entitled to a return ticket to the original airport which you originally travelled from.

If a SAS Scandinavian Airlines delay causes you to arrive three hours later at your destination, then you might be able to receive compensation, depending on the flight distance and how long your delay is. You can see your rights below:

  • Flights of 1,500 km or less – the entitlement is 250 € in compensation per passenger.
  • Flights between 1,500 km – 3,500 km – the entitlement is 400 € in compensation per passenger.
  • Flights over 3,500 km – the entitlement is 600 € in compensation per passenger.

The distance is calculated as the distance between the original departure airport and the final destination. As it can be seen above, there is less compensation for short flights, inside Europe. A long haul flight means that the airlines must pay more compensation to you as a passenger.

However, the reason for the delayed or canceled flights must always be assessed. There is no compensation to be received if the flight is delayed due to extraordinary circumstances, such as extreme weather conditions, sudden political unrest or other circumstances that are unpredictable or outside the airline’s control.

But, be aware that these must be extraordinary circumstances, and here the excuse of bad weather is therefore not sufficient. Many airlines including SAS Scandinavian Airlines will apologize and come up with the excuse for a flight cancellation with ‘’extraordinary circumstances’’ to avoid paying compensation.

The real cause can be for example technical problems, which are in the control of the airline and therefore the airline would be obliged to pay compensation. That’s why it requires experienced experts who can disprove these rejections.

We at Air Delay can offer this with a NO WIN, NO FEE solution. We have helped more than 10,000 passengers who have experienced delayed and canceled flights. We have taken many airlines to court and we have proven countless times that we can win back your compensation.

Many people feel safe booking their airline tickets with SAS Scandinavian Airlines, as it has a good reputation. But it does not mean that SAS will not try to avoid paying compensation, like every other airline. The airline often leaves its passengers with few options and with extreme frustration. Especially in 2020 and 2021, the Scandinavian Airlines System has not lived up to their part of the agreement towards their passengers, as they have been withholding their customers’ money.

In addition to compensation, the operating airline must offer additional services such as phone calls, meals, hotel accommodation and transport. If your SAS flight is so delayed that a hotel stay becomes necessary, SAS will have to cover your hotel expenses, in addition to transport to and from the hotel. Passengers are eligible for free drinks and food after 2 hours of waiting, as well as two phone calls. However, all of these expenses must be documented in order for you to claim back the money from the airline, therefore you should always keep your receipts.

SAS Scandinavian Airlines refund flight cancellation

What are your rights if your SAS Scandinavian Airlines plane was cancelled, and you never left? In this situation you are entitled to one of these options:

  • A refund of the amount you purchased the ticket for.
  • A new flight so you can fly with the next available departure.
  • A new flight later that suits your needs.

If a rebooking is chosen so that you can come with the next available flight, then SAS Scandinavian must offer hotel accommodation and transport if that becomes necessary.

You may also be entitled to compensation in this case – here the amount will again depend on how long of a flight you are going on.

Your rights are therefore as follows:

  • Flights of 1,500 km or less – the entitlement is 250€ in compensation per passenger.
  • Flights between 1,500 km – 3,500 km – the entitlement is 400€ in compensation per passenger.
  • Flights over 3,500 km – the entitlement is 600€ in compensation per passenger.

The compensation is not possible if you have been informed about the cancellation 14 days before departure, nor if you have been rebooked to a flight at a similar time or if cancellations are due to extraordinary circumstances.

If a delay or cancellation makes it necessary to book new airline tickets, then SAS must cover the same expenses.
